Jack of All Trades, Master of None

February 8, 2006 | Business & Commerce | Life | Products & Opportunites | SoL

A business colleague whom I met at a SoL gathering emailed asking if I or anyone I knew would be qualified and interested in presenting his seminar for 5-7 days in May and June. I sent a bio, CV, and selected projects list. The response (in part):

Wow! Talk about diversity! Clearly you are virtually undefinable.

Taking it as a compliment, I asked if I could use his quote in my media kit. What the heck - if people can't figure out what you do, you can at least have good marketing.

Question: Correct use of 'whom' in the first sentence? Answer: Yes. Details in the comments.

Whom: yes, that's correct. You're using it to refer to an object (not to objectify your colleague). You met HIM. If he was doing the meeting, you'd use "who."

Answer: Correct.

Thanks much.

(I'm not sure why you're comments aren't showing up right away. I've told MT to trust both of you twice – but there are so many settings it's hard to know why you're being delayed.)

Regarding the comment sitch: Though I click the 'Remember me' radio button every time, you never do.

I don't take it personally though.

Regarding whom: If you reverse the order of the phrase — 'I met a business colleague' &mdash and then try replacing 'business colleague' with either 'he' or 'him', you'll find that 'I met him' is obviously the correct choice. Since 'whom' is the equivalent of 'him' (as opposed to 'who', which is the equivalent of 'he'), you're all set.

Clear as mud? Makes sense to me...
