Wishing for Skirts
July 10, 2006 | Life
After wearing shorts for nine full days, wearing slacks to work today feels so constraining. Oh, if only men could wear skirts in the summer.

They can and do in Seattle: http://www.utilikilts.com/

Mike, it's like an audio system -- upgrade one part and you wind up buying something else. First skirts, then panty hose (or whatever they'd call it when marketing to men), then shaved legs (or shaved in patterns to emphasize the hair).
That's why we men choose a totally different path. We buy little gadgets from catalogs to blow air up our pants.

I once traded a pink mirrored Indian skirt to my friend Kenneth in exchange for a Dead ticket. I don't remember much about the show. Madison Square Garden—1992 maybe? But he wore that skirt all summer.

Oh, man! I checked out those utilikilts, ashley. I predict Michael J. is totally sold.
They do a great job of dealing with the "wearing a skirt" problem (at least before the sale) with their so-masculine site. The "Mockers" concept is clever, too.
Not cheap, though. I wonder what it will look like by the time it's in Walmart.

1) It's amazing which blog posts generate lots of comments.
2) Ashley begins the "move to Seattle" siren call. At this point I think Seattle gets less rain than New England, so it's plausible.
3) Speaking of plausible, men in skirts at Dead shows is where I first got the idea. I was at that MSG '92 show hilllady, and I think I remember seeing you there, now that I think about it. I knew we would meet again.
4) Would I wear a tie with the Utilikilt, or is there a special "blouse" that goes well?

In some parts of PNG the police officers sometimes wear sarongs with their army boots, and they still manage to look pretty formidable.
Translated into our hairphobic society, however, this may lead to other things...leg waxing. Be warned!!!

On the tie question:
Tie with button-down collar and pocket protector and an unswervable attitude of "are we going to think about clothes, or are we going to get the job done?" If that isn't a mental/emotional exercise, I don't know what is.
For academics, bow-tie would be acceptable. String-tie or bolero would be taking the easy way out.

Skirts are nice in the breeze department but oh the chaffing. Dear lord the chaffing. You should wish for open toed shoes instead.

There is nothing wrong with you wearing a skirt, as long as it is in good taste, after all even Jesus wore them. Why men even started to wear pants is probably just in order to do battle. In the days of the Romans they even wore skirts, anyone want to tell them they are sissy's.
Those who wore robes just pulled them up from behind and tucked them into their belt, now thats a versitle war)d(robe.

Hi
I wear skirts regularly - far more comfortable than trousers. Just been cycling for a week, and its pure bliss to get out of bike shorts and into a skirt. Stick the desk fan under the table and you have it sorted... :-)
